Know the Properties of Granite Stone

There are many different characteristics of granite that makes it ideal for pathway, cladding, a kitchen countertop, bathroom vanity tops, etc. There are various properties of granite, like:

  1. Durability,
  2. Scratch-resistant,
  3. Heat resistant,
  4. Porosity, etc.

Is Granite Long Lasting?

Granite is a very hard stone, so it can withstand wear and tear very well. Works well in areas of intense use, such as roads, sidewalks and even kitchen counters. It is a stone slightly vulnerable to acidic substances like alcohol or lemon juice.

Due to the characteristics of granite, this stone has been chosen for centuries, suitable for pavements, covering walls, entrances, etc.

Can Granite be Damaged?

Like any solid surface, high impact hits can damage the granite. Granite will chip or break if subjected to hard and sharp objects. But it is possible to repair a splinter by filling with granite powder.

Unsealed granite can absorb stains like oil, which can cause dark stains or discolouration.

Granite may have sharp and thick edges, which can cause injury. Therefore, chamfers, rounding, etc. can be made.

Does granite splinter or break easily?

No, usually granite should not break if you have proper thickness. The basis on which the stone is applied should be checked for proper installation and should be as level as possible. Otherwise, for the granite stone to break or chip, only something of the same hardness can cause damage.

Some granite may crack during transport and installation. However, normal use will not harm this durable material. A small crack can be repaired using a granite sealer.

How scratch-resistant is Granite?

Granite characteristics make it one of the hardest stones on the planet. It cannot be scratched in common use; even a knife blade does not scratch it. Under normal use, even when cutting directly on it, it will not harm the finish of the bench. Unlike any other surface, granite does not lose its lustre. It can only be scratched by another piece of granite or by specially sharpened tools, designed for this purpose, like diamond and tungsten discs.

Is Granite porous?

Some more porous granites can be waterproofed during the industrial process of manufacturing and/or installing them. On certain granite floors or granite countertops, if not properly sealed, it can be porous to some extent.

How heat resistant is Granite?

Granite is not affected by exposure to common heat sources outside. Granite is heat resistant up to a temperature between 150°C and 200°C; it will be difficult to see breaks or cracks in specific situations of extreme temperatures; however, after some time, small cracks may appear, which reduces resistance.

At home, granite is also unaffected by exposure to common heat sources. To avoid possible damage, avoid extreme temperature changes, such as placing something cold in a granite area right after placing something hot in that area.

Is Granite slippery?

Unpolished granite is not slippery when used in paving. Highly polished (shiny) granite slabs can become slippery when wet.

Based on the properties of this raw material, granite is considered the best future material for civil construction. One of the excellent properties that granite has is the ease of cleaning. Therefore, it is the best choice for public construction or for your home. In addition, granite has an important performance in maintaining house hygiene and, finally, good health.

Should I Be Concerned About Bacteria on Granite?

Yes, as with any other surface. We suggest that your granite countertops or floors to be cleaned with an antibacterial cleaner from time to time to kill any bacteria. Polished granite, even if treated with a sealant, is not perfectly smooth nor is it inherently antiseptic. It has many small cracks and pores that can become home to bacteria.

Does polished granite stain?

Most of the time, polished granite does not stain. Granite has very low porosity. Some granite colours can absorb a little moisture with prolonged contact compared to others.

For example, a puddle of water on the counter, for some colours, can leave a dark stain when the water is clean. Normally, there are no permanent traces after the liquid is removed and the granite dries. A granite sealer is recommended for all granite after installation.

Granite stains can be prevented if the spill is quickly cleaned up. If a spill remains unclean for several hours, such as oil, coffee or paint, the granite will naturally stain.
